Employee Volunteering
Our People Making a Difference in the Community Each year, Alcoa employees in Australia volunteer around 90,000 personal hours of their time to help build stronger communities. Volunteering and community engagement are critical aspects of how we do business, and integral to how we live Alcoa values outside of the workplace. Our Australian workforce continues to get behind the Alcoa’s signature volunteering programs ACTION and Bravo!, generating thousands in community funding each year. This funding benefits all aspects of the community, from emergency services and health care, to the environment, conservation projects and schools. ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) recognises the team effort of at least five Alcoa employees who spend a minimum of four hours on a community service project for a local not-for-profit, community or non-governmental organisation. In recognition of the team's effort, Alcoa makes a contribution to the organisation and grants are up to $US3,000.
In 2009, 75 ACTION grants were awarded in Australia, thanks to the efforts of 757 employees who donated 3810 hours of their time. This equated to a total of US$190,500 in community funding.
Bravo! recognises individual Alcoa employees’ who volunteer 50 hours of personal time, in one year, to a not-for-profit, community or non-governmental organisation. Every Alcoa employee in Australia is entitled to one Bravo! grant each year.
In 2009, 924 Bravo! participants, who donated 90,597.8 hours of their personal time, collectively generated US$231,000 for their community organisations.
In total our people generated US$421,500 in 2009, up from US$308,000 in 2008.
Also in 2009, Alcoa employees beat their own record of 90,976 hours of volunteering in one year which was recorded in 2008. They reached 94,407 hours in 2009, equating to nearly 4000 days of volunteering, or nearly 11 years!
Alcoa employees volunteer their time and services across a wide range of activities. There is great support of regional communities with 87.5% of Alcoa employee volunteers doing community work in non-metropolitan areas.
There is also a direct connection between volunteering and Alcoa’s employee training and development programs. As we develop our people to be leaders at work, this training and leadership experience equips them to be leaders in the community within charities and community groups – further contributing to the skills within the community.
Volunteering at Alcoa is a core business practice and in celebration of our amazing Alcoa volunteers, we hold a global ‘Month of Service’ in October every year. Month of Service is a dedicated time to encourage and recognise our thousands of employee volunteers not just in Australia, but around the world. Volunteering events are held in over 24 countries, where Alcoa has operations, partnering with local not-for-profit organisations to make a real and lasting impact. Read more. At Alcoa, we believe we have a responsibility to help build and strengthen our communities, and getting thousands of our people out and about, getting their hands dirty, does make a difference.
