Employee Volunteering

our people making a difference in the community
Each year, Alcoa employees in Australia volunteer around 90,000 personal hours of their time to help build stronger communities.

Volunteering and community engagement are critical aspects of how we do business, and integral to how we live Alcoa values outside of the workplace.

Particularly as the world faces economic uncertainty, we realise that volunteering and supporting our communities is more important than ever before – a belief clearly echoed by our people.

In 2008, we hit an Alcoa volunteering milestone – with a decade of service in one year! We hit a company record of 90,976 hours donated to community and not-for-profit organisations and events – that’s equivalent to 3,791 days or 10.4 years!

Also in 2008, 22 per cent of our Aussie workforce got on board with the Alcoa Foundation’s signature volunteering programs ACTION and Bravo! generating a total of $308,000 (US dollars) in community funding.  This funding benefited all aspects of the community, from emergency services and health care to environment conservation and schools.

ACTION (Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) recognises the team efforts of at least five Alcoa employees who spend a minimum of four hours on a community service project for a local not-for-profit, community or non-governmental organisation. In recognition of the team's effort, the Alcoa Foundation makes a contribution to the organisation; grants are up to $US3,000. In 2008, 43 ACTION grants were awarded, thanks to the efforts of 528 employees.

Bravo! recognises individual Alcoa employees’ who volunteer 50 hours of personal time, in one year, to a not-for-profit, community or non-governmental organisation. Every Alcoa employee in Australia is entitled to one Bravo! grant each year. In 2008, 752 Bravo! participants collectively generated nearly $200,000 for their community organisations. An achievement praised by our Managing Director Alan Cransberg.

“Volunteering is in Alcoa’s DNA, it’s a critical part of our social responsibility and I expect everyone to get involved in some capacity,” Alan said.

“Watching numbers grow is fantastic and makes me exceptionally proud. The world we live in today cries out for more community spirit and person-to-person support. Alcoa is absolutely a part of that.”

Volunteering at Alcoa is a core business practice and in celebration of our amazing Alcoa volunteers, we hold a global ‘Month of Service’ in October every year.

Month of Service is a dedicated time to encourage and recognise our thousands of employee volunteers not just in Australia, but around the world. Volunteering events are held in over 200 Alcoa communities, in 33 countries, partnering with local not-for-profit organisations to make a real and lasting impact. Read more.

At Alcoa, we believe we have a responsibility to help build and strengthen our communities, and getting thousands of our people out and about, getting their hands dirty, does make a difference.
