Established in 1952, Alcoa Foundation is a global resource that actively invests in improving the quality of life in more than 32 countries around the world where Alcoa operates.

The Alcoa Foundation assists Australian communities in four main areas:
  • Awarding grants to non-profit organisations in accordance with the Areas of Excellence that support conservation and sustainability, global education and workplace skills, business and community partnerships and safe and healthy children and families
  • Encouraging employee engagement (volunteering) through two programs – ACTION and Bravo! 
  • Response to local and global needs when disaster strikes and taking a proactive role in strengthening communities in emergency preparedness.
  • establishing a global Social Venture/Enterprise Forum to bring together experts from around the world to help Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) be more effective and financially sustainable
 
In Australia, the Alcoa Foundation strengthens the capacities of individuals and communities by providing skills, expertise and financial support for local communities.  Alcoa employees who volunteer provide direct benefit to community organisations, but also assist develop the by-products of volunteering - such as friendship, belonging, tolerance and trust amongst members of the group and the wider community.
 
The nature of community organisations that have received support from our employee engagement initiatives reflect the broad skills and interests of our employees.  They have included emergency services, disability services, sports, arts and environmental groups.
 
The program links the Alcoa Foundation to representatives from all community sectors through relationships that have been forged through our employees volunteer efforts.  The program recognises that employees and community organisations are best placed to identify local issues and areas that require financial support, human support or both.  The existing framework encourages volunteers to develop their own strategies and make their own policy decisions suited to their individual interests and community needs.
