Volunteer profile: Nick McAteer
Point Henry OH&S coordinator Nick McAteer lives and breathes safety so much so that he volunteers at his local primary school to educate students about the importance of safety. Since the start of 2009, Nick – who is also a school councillor at Barwon Heads Primary – has volunteered his time assisting with safety issues around the school, including hazard and risk assessments and safety walks. One such visit had Nick presenting recently to 40 Prep students about Alcoa and our safety culture. “I discussed hazards such as hot surfaces, mobile equipment and other dangers,” Nick explained. “Five volunteers tried on PPE such as safety vests, gloves, glasses and hardhats before conducting question time.” Nick is also a member of the school’s environment committee and enjoys being able to assist the school with their safety issues. “I decided to volunteer firstly for personal development and to assist a community organisation, and also to apply knowledge from the workplace to help make the students and school a safe place for all,” he said. Nick’s volunteering efforts also mean the school is eligible for a US $250 grant, which will go towards providing new equipment for students.
