Volunteer profile: Katrina Antony
With a love of the beach and a love of water, it was only natural that Katrina Antony spends her spare time volunteering as a surf lifesaver. On weekends, the Portland Aluminium Business Support Officer helps out at the Portland Surf Lifesaving Club (PSLSC) and with Lifesaving Victoria (LSV). “I participated in surf lifesaving when I lived in Sydney,” Katrina explained, “and when I moved out to Bridgewater, in Portland, joined the PSLSC in 2005 - even though there is a huge difference in water temperature!” As part of her duties, Katrina patrols every summer at Bridgewater Beach and Narrawong Beach, while also representing the committee for PSLSC in the roles of Vice President and Club Captain. “I was also nominated by LSV this year and accepted the position of Western District Officer of Victoria,” Katrina said. “This position encompasses clubs including Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Port Campbell, Mildura and Portland and means I will be travelling a lot during summer to the various clubs, overseeing assessments and training of their members. I also have the responsibility ensuring clubs in the district are following the policies, procedures and guidelines set by LSV.” According to Katrina, volunteering brings people together. “It promotes self-growth. You get to meet new people and make new friends. You can use your skills and learn new skills. It provides an opportunity to give back what has been given to you. “As I love the beach and the water, I get to volunteer for a community organisation where I can combine my love of the surf and also knowing that I am providing a community service that I have been trained for.” Thanks to Katrina’s volunteering efforts, Bravo! grants have allowed the lifesaving club to purchase a variety of rescue equipment required for patrols, training, and competitions. Katrina also volunteers for the CEMA (Council of the Encouragement of Music and the Arts), holding the position of newsletter co-ordination.
