Volunteer profile: Ray Polaski
Portland Health Resource Officer Ray Polaski is the unit controller of the Portland SES branch and estimates he volunteers around 850 hours a year with the organisation. An SES volunteer for 28 years, Ray decided to get involved so he could give something useful back to the community and to those who need assistance in times of emergency. Ray’s duties at the SES vary from overall management of the unit, ensuring the unit has volunteers, finances, training, equipment management, liaising with other agencies, attend municipal, region and state meetings and conferences, public relations, community service, to fundraising and ensuring a 24/7 emergency response to natural disasters and rescues. “I enjoy all aspects of what the SES does and the friendship within the volunteer network and being part of a system that enjoys and is willing to share the same things,” he said. Ray’s Bravo! grants for the SES have gone towards a variety of equipment, such as spine boards, O2 therapy units, GPS units for vehicles, a Hydraulic Combi tool used in road crash rescues and a sea-snake portable inspection camera. The grants allow unit volunteers to put more effort into training for emergencies instead of constantly raising funds. Ray also volunteers for the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Portland.
