Case Study - Future Women of Industry
Sharon Bluett has her mind set on a career as an environmental scientist and she has taken a step closer to that goal as one of the 2003 Alcoa Future Women of Industry Scholarship recipients. Sharon’s determination is reflected in the number of extracurricular activities she has completed. She attended the Alcoa sponsored Millennium Kids “Follow Your Dream” environmental conference in 2002 and has been involved in many local environmental rehabilitation projects. Sharon attends Bunbury Senior High School and is one of 11 young women to enter the Future Women of Industry Scholarship program at Alcoa’s Wagerup Refinery and Willowdale Mine this year. She said the growing need for environmental specialists in industry and Alcoa’s expertise in the field attracted her to the scholarship. “It will add to my experience and will make a real difference when I am ready to enter the workforce,” Sharon said. The scholarship recipients were officially welcomed by Alcoa’s Wagerup Refinery and Willowdale Mine management at a breakfast presentation recently. Wagerup Refinery Manager Ann Whitty said the scholarship was about providing young women with an insight to the careers available in industry, with the end goal of achieving a workforce where men and women are equally represented. “The nature of our business means it is male dominated but we recognise the qualities women bring to a workforce and strive for greater equality,” Ms Whitty said. “The young women we welcomed today are proactive and focussed on their future careers. They are the type of employees we would like to have working at Alcoa.” This is the third year Wagerup Refinery has conducted the program and the first time the Willowdale Mine has been involved. Willowdale Mine Manager Mal Briggs said many people did not understand the scope of career opportunities available in industry. “Many people believe that Alcoa is only about big trucks and moving dirt. This scholarship will help to dispel this view and inform students about the vast range of career possibilities in industry,” he said.
