RESEARCH HYDROLOGIST - ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Environmental Scientist to join Alcoa’s Mining Group as a Research Hydrologist. 

Located in the Darling Ranges less than an hour from Perth and 40 minutes from Mandurah, the Huntly bauxite mine produces 23 millions tonnes of bauxite annually, supplying the Pinjarra and Kwinana alumina refineries.  The mine is located in the jarrah forest which is managed for multiple land uses including water production, timber production, conservation, recreation and mining.
 
Working with senior research scientists, both internally and with external collaborating organisations, this position will undertake plant-soil-water relations studies at a range of scales to understand the effects of mining on stream water quantity and quality. This position will also develop and support local- to catchment-scale numerical modelling applications to effectively manage the effects of mining and assist in the determination of rehabilitation strategies for refinery residue storage facilities
 
Reporting to the Environmental Research Manager, in this role you will:
 
  • Provide high quality advice and professional research services in the areas of hydrology, eco-hydrology, numerical modelling and mine water management.
  • Undertake joint research programs with government, the CSIRO and academic scientists to rigorously assess the effects of mining and maximise the availability of ore to the Company.
  • Plan, implement and/or supervise complex medium- to large-scale research projects, both internally and with external collaborating organisations.
  • Convey research outcomes to a diverse audience, including government regulators.
  • Lead and develop the research team capabilities.
 
This position is best suited to an experienced Tertiary qualified Research Hydrologist. However, graduates with 4-5 years relevant experience will be considered. To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated research experience in the areas of hydrology, plant-soil-water relations and numerical modelling applications. You will have ability to work with internal stakeholders and a variety of external research organisations. Experience with complex, medium to large research projects will be highly regarded.
