PROCESS METALLURGIST/RESEARCH SCIENTIST
KWINANA REFINERY, Australia

A challenging opportunity exists for a highly capable process metallurgist to join Alcoa World Alumina’s Global Refining Technology Delivery Group (TDG), based at Kwinana, Western Australia.

TDG comprises more than 80 highly qualified scientists, engineers, managers and support staff, and supplies technical support and new and improved alumina refining technology, across a challenging range of process areas, to 9 refineries worldwide. 
 
You will become a leading member of TDG’s digestion and clarification technology delivery program, and be accountable for developing and executing research and development projects to improve Bayer process operation. The position will also provide technical expertise and project implementation support, and involve regular interactions with worldwide refinery personnel. 
 
The challenge will be to participate in and lead research and development project teams, and ensure the practical delivery of improvements to refinery productivity, efficiency, cost effectiveness, product quality and safety based on:
 
  • sound understanding of chemical, metallurgical and process fundamentals
  • an innovative, systematic approach to problem solving
  • hands-on investigations, through lab experimentation and pilot and plant trials
  • an aptitude for reconciliation, interpretation and modelling of process data
  • practical skills in the calibration and use of process simulations
  • regular interactions with plant technical and operational staff
  • ongoing interactions with external technology suppliers
 
Job Requirements
 
Ideally, we are seeking applications from candidates with experience at a senior level, but candidates with varying levels of experience are encouraged to apply.
 
To be successful, you will possess a relevant degree in physical science or engineering, with process metallurgy or related content, preferably at honours or higher level, and have a strong desire for ongoing learning and development. You will also have practical experience in process metallurgy and/or related fields.
 
With well developed organisational, leadership and project management skills, you will have a proactive, innovative outlook and practical problem solving skills. You will also be a collaborative team player, with superior oral and written communication abilities and have an overriding commitment to safe working practices.
