Managing Director's Overview

Alcoa begins a new era in leadership and sustainability reporting
February 2008 saw the arrival of a new Managing Director for Alcoa of Australia. When Wayne Osborn announced his retirement after 29 years of service, Alan Cransberg took the helm, paying homage to Wayne for his dedication, leadership and vision.

“Wayne has steadfastly driven Alcoa’s sustainability vision and it has been through his passion for our employees, the community and the environment that sustainability is integral to all aspects of our business,” Alan said.

“Under Wayne’s leadership Alcoa achieved a great deal in 2007 thanks to the efforts of everyone across all of our operating locations.”

Some of the achievements include:

  • For the second time our bauxite mining group received a prestigious WA Golden Gecko Award and received a certificate of acceptance for rehabilitation at Jarrahdale.

  • We had record input and involvement in our employee suggestion scheme with more than 10,500 suggestions to improve our business, 4000 more than last year. Ideas direct from refinery and mine site employees resulted in significant safety, environmental and efficiency improvements. Our employees earned $168,000 in bonuses for their ideas implemented through the ESS which resulted in $1.9 million in cost savings to our business.

“Looking forward to 2008 there are many things we have to continue to do to ensure Alcoa’s success in Australia,” Alan said.

“We must build on our relationships with all our various stakeholders.  It is through strong partnerships with our employees, communities, government, and non-governmental organisations around Australia that we can continue to invigorate communities, promote conservation, and advance sustainability programs for the long-term benefit of all.”

“One of the highest priorities will be delivering on our targets and commitments – socially, financially and environmentally – we have to earn the right to grow both locally and internationally and we will do it in line with our values.”

“Sustainability is about people and doing the right things – everyday and always – while continuously investing in the future. There are exciting and challenging times ahead. Alcoa is an outstanding company, with great employees who are keen and dedicated to doing the right thing. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead the organisation into the future,” Alan said.

Key focus areas for us have been climate change, innovation and growth, water, environmental custodianship and our people.
