What we produce
The aluminium production process starts at our Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines in the Darling Range south of Perth in Western Australia. Huntly is the world’s second largest bauxite mine and together with Willowdale supplies bauxite to Alcoa’s three Australian alumina refineries at Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup. The refineries extract alumina from the bauxite which is then exported to customers throughout the world, with approximately four per cent shipped to Alcoa's smelter in Victoria.

Portland Aluminium Smelter in Portland, Victoria, smelts alumina into aluminium ingots. Portland Aluminium is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia Limited (45%), Eastern Aluminium Portland Pty Ltd (10%) (a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa of Australia), CITIC Nominees Pty Ltd (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia Pty Ltd (22.5%). Alcoa manages day to day operations at the smelter.

Each year Alcoa mines approximately 32 million bone dry metric tonnes of bauxite, refines approximately nine million tonnes of alumina and produces approximately 300,000 tonnes of aluminium.

Alcoa produces almost 43 per cent of Australia’s alumina and approximately 20 per cent of Australia’s aluminium. Our alumina production in Western Australia accounts for approximately eight per cent of total world demand.

Contributing to the Australian economy
Alcoa has been investing in Australia for 53 years. Each year, more than 75 per cent of our total revenue stays in Australia through wages, local purchasing, taxes, royalties, capital investment and dividends to Australian shareholders.

Alcoa is one of Australia’s leading exporters, contributing around $4 billion in exports each year.
