Steel wheels and Alcoa Forged Wheels

Alcoa forged wheels are about 10 mm. thicker than steel wheels. Because there are not enough extra threads on heavy equipment with steel wheels (10mm for front axle and 20 mm for back two-wheel axle) they must be replaced to guarantee proper tightness.

The replacement attachment bolt is longer to compensate for the greater thickness of the aluminum wheel, therefore assuring proper wheel tightness. The other characteristics of the bolt, such as hub-hole type, metal, and thread pitch remain the same. Hence, the nuts do not need to be replaced.

Different axles

Some manufacturers may offer different axles with a smaller hub. Depending on the type of axle used, it is advisable to use even longer nuts for the proper housing of the hub.
Special notice for longer trucks: if the third axle of the truck is not original equipment, compare the bolt with the other axles.
Special notice for semi-trailers equipped with supersingle wheel, where a single wheel replaces the double wheel.

Specifying the Bolt

When contacting Alcoa, have the following information ready:

Ø       Make and model of the truck, bus, or semi-trailer;

Ø       Installation location: front axle / back axle

Important: On highway buses with three or four axles, it must be determined how many axles have simple or double wheels must be checked.

Example of measurement 121 x 20

Warning: Attaching an Alcoa aluminum with a non-elongated bolt will lead to partial tightening of the nut, i.e., the wheel is attached with few threads in contact with the nut.

Practice safety

Bolts and nuts must be checked periodically and replaced when in poor condition. Should the bolt break, immediately replace the nearby bolts also. If two or more bolts are broken, replace all bolts.
Too much or too little torque causes problems in the bolt and/or wheels, undermining overall safety. Alcoa recommends a tightness of 55 to 65 kg. m.
It is recommended that wheel tightness be monitored at least every 2,000 km. traveled, using a torque meter.
