Wheel Mounting

There a few tips you should follow when mounting wheels:
  • Stud bolts and nuts for aluminum wheels are different from those used for steel wheels. Use parts specific for aluminum wheels.
  • Clean all parts and mounting surface to remove corrosion or dust before mounting. During mounting, make sure no dirt enters the mounting location. Dust or uneven surfaces can cause loose wheels.
  • Replace bent, broken or scratched stud bolts. When changing a broken stud, change the studs on both sides at the same time. If more than 2 stud bolts are broken, change all stud bolts.
  • Lubricate the threads of stud bolts and other area specified by each car manufacture. For ISO hub pilot mounting system, lubricate contact surface between nut and washer of two pieces flange nut.
  • Use wheel wrench with care to avoid damaging the wheel while tightening nuts.  Use proper protection to prevent scratch or damage.
  • Follow proper tightening sequence of nuts. Use proper torque specified each car manufacturer to tighten nuts.
  • Check torque of nut after 50-100km run (first run), and tighten nuts with proper torque if necessary.
  • Check torque often. When cap nut becomes loose, stud bolts will be distorted. If multiple cap nuts are loose, wheel or stud bolts may break. A spiral line from stud bolt hole is the sign of a loose cap nut.
 
Mounting Wheel with 32mm Bolt Hholes
 
32mm ISO hub pilot style bolt holes allow you to use standard steel wheel bolts to mount aluminum wheels with special cap nuts (see drawing below). Alcoa provides 32mm bolt hole wheels and special cap nuts for Benz trucks.
 
 
 Warning: Use proper torque and sequence to tighten cap nuts. Loose nuts cause loose wheels, and studs will suffer metal fatigue. Overtorquing will distort and break studs and cause cracks and damage to the bolt hole of wheel. In either case, the wheel may detach resulting in death or serious injury. Alcoa won’t accept over torqued wheel as warranty claims. Always follow proper mounting procedure.
 
 Warning: Use proper cap nut. An improper cap nut can cause loose wheel, stud breakage, wheel cracking, and detachment, causing death or serious injury.
Cap nuts with chromate coating won’t get proper torque due to chromate coating of wheel contact surface. Therefore they should not be used.
 
Prevention for Hub and Wheel adhesion
  • Aluminum has a high resistance to corrosion. However, it can corrode when covered with such salt or soil. This can cause hub and wheel adhesion. In order to prevent this adhesion phenomena, Alcoa recommends ALgrease (or equivalent) for hub and wheel (especially for ISO hub pilot style wheel).
  • Before mounting an aluminum wheel, apply ALgrease on the hub guide surface and wheel bore (side wall of wheel hub hole) (see below). Grease should not apply on the hub and wheel mounting surface.

 
 
ALgrease has good heat resistance and is safe to use for aluminum wheel and tire. It can be used for air valve and tire mounting. Because most other greases are commonly water-soluble or include heavy metal, they could cause corrosion and should not be used. ALgrease will be available at the Alcoa wheel sales shops, or contact Alcoa Wheel Service Center.
