As home to Hollywood’s favorite sports team, Staples Center required a design from architects N.B.B. Johnson that would reflect the magic and excitement of the city as well as the greatness of the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers.
Alcoa assisted in the preliminary design, which included covering the exterior walls of the oval shaped building with Reynobond® Aluminum Composite Material.
With their intricate patterns and trapezoidal shaped panels, the walls — which slope upward at a 15º angle — proved to be an engineering and fabrication challenge. The end result is made even more spectacular by a series of colored spotlights surrounding the arena, which reflect off the Reynobond surfaces to create a purple halo over Staples Center — visible from up to 10 miles away on game nights.
