When designing the 76,000-square-foot terminal building at London International Airport – a spacious, light-filled, airy structure resembling an antique airline hangar – the architects were faced with a challenge. The new expansion needed to be unified with an existing tower and older portions of the terminal building. To meet this challenge, designers chose Alcoa Architectural Products’ new Reynobond® Natural Metals Zinc Composite Material and Aluminum Composite Material for the façade and soffits.
Flynn Canada fabricated 18,000 square feet of Reynobond® ZCM into a gently curving “wave form” shape on the soffit area of the main entrance to the terminal. The zinc flows from the outside in through the front concourse and into the building. The new material allowed designers to fabricate the architectural elements of the design with the ease inherent in aluminum composite materials. To re-clad the existing brick tower, 25,000 square feet of Reynobond® ACM was used.
