When it was time to expand and renovate the city’s convention center, the architects wanted to celebrate the area’s most distinctive feature, the Grand River. The resulting structure includes a distinctive roofline that flows and curves, with unique boomerang-shaped supports giving shape to the light-filled, glass-enclosed Grand Gallery. Due to its flatness, uniformity and formability, Reynobond was the material of choice for the façade.
The unconventional design was aided by a computer fabrication process, shaping 40,000 square feet of Reynobond ACM for the bullnose, fascia panels, marquis sign, beam wrap and cooling towers. The curved steel beams of the Grand Gallery, which rise 80 feet into the air, are constructed with a curved rib made from a tube faced with Reynobond ACM panels of varying size along the length.
